Children's Books Recommendations from Ishmael

Ishmael is a lifelong and avid reader, and during our interview I asked him to name his favorite books from his childhood and youth.  It wasn't very nice of me to ask him that without any warning, but he was kind enough to send me a list by email:

The Once and Future King, by T.H. White
The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexandre Dumas
The Three Musketeers, by Alexandre Dumas
Twenty Years After, by Alexandre Dumas
Ten Years Later, by Alexandre Dumas
Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson
The Red Badge of Courage, by Stephen Crane
Moby Dick, by Herman Melville, a children's edition
Foundation, by Isaac Asimov
Foundation and Empire, by Isaac Asimov
Second Foundation, by Isaac Asimov
Farenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury
Dandelion Wine, by Ray Bradbury
Childhood's End, by Arthur C. Clarke
The Old Man and the Sea, by Ernest Hemingway,
Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee, by Dee Brown
Give Your Heart to the Hawks, by Winfred Blevins
The Indian in the Cupboard, by Lynne Reid Banks
The Chronicles of Narnia, by C.S. Lewis

Thank you so much for these titles, Ishmael.  Readers, please leave your suggestions in the comments.

  1. Hah, Ishmael was a precocious child- some of these books pretty advanced. I like the list and i have probably read more than half. I will add three:
    Dune- by Herbert
Untouched by Human Hands- by Robert Sheckley (obscure but really got my blood up as tween)
Starship Troopers- by Heinlein (originally published as a juvenile)

  3. Those books ARE pretty well advanced for a "child's" understanding, most of them. Wonderful, though, if they can handle them.

I'd add LeGuin's "Earthsea" series (6 books) to that list.
